  My partner and I visited Winchester for a day and decided to have lunch at the Royal Oak - this is where things started to go wrong. We ordered two half pints, a steak and a burger. The waiter didn't point out to us that we would only pay £1 for a pint when ordering a burger and charged us £1.8 for each half pint. When I pointed out to her that she ripped us off and that I could have gotten a pint for only £1 instead of a half pint for £1.8, she started arguing. By then we were already upset, but things got worse. The food took 40 minutes (how difficult is it to fry a steak and some meat patties). The steak was drained in oil and consisted of 80% of fat. We asked for medium rare, however, the steak was partly raw, partly medium rare and partly well done. The fries were soggy and the meat patties were rock solid and smelled of fish. Please do yourself a favour and fire your chef! Don't come here unless you wish to be disappointed. Thank you Royal Oak for ruining our trip to Winchester!

  This whole oldest pub or whatever it is that they are claiming to be is all well and fine and enough to warrant grabbing a pint I suppose but it's really not worth it. There are nicer pubs and better pubs all over. This one is pretty basic and just benefits for a great location and catchy tourist grab.
